It is that big metal thing hanging from the ceiling. Both people and dogs will appreciate this. We don’t have one in the old location so that is why during the holiday season we would have the doors open to help cool down from all the baking. It would get up to 85 in the middle of winter in our store. Oh well, those pups needed there treats so we just keep on baking.

The Spaw area is coming along with the window frames in place. I love that we have windows in Spaw. This way you can check out all the dogs getting groomed. It is always so much fun to see all the different breeds and hairstyles.
All the drywall arrived. Soon we will have real walls!

We have walls going up for Spaw. Spaw will have windows so everyone can see the dogs getting their makeovers. Inside we will have top-of-the-line equipment like full-sized stainless steel bathing tubs. Plus, we will have custom made pre- and post-spaw bed lounges for each dog. This way your dog is comfortable in case they need to wait for you to come get them after their poochie makeover.

In the right hand corner you can see our new, larger fridge. This will be a huge help for Chef Jake when catering big events like Dog’s Night Out. All the metal half walls are where the new kitchen will be. We made sure to have plenty of space to keep rolling out all those drool-icious treats that your dogs beg for.

Our Village Pointe location is moving into a bigger space. Don’t worry we will still be in Village Pointe. We will be just about 100 steps away from our old location. Construction officially started on July 20th and things are coming along nicely with the build out. Chuckles, Maurice and their trusty sidekick, Clyde, have been keeping an eye on things to make sure the construction crew is keeping on schedule.

Here are some shots from inside our new space. We have a new HUGE fridge to help store our drool-icious treats. Chef Jake is super excited that he will not only have more treat storage but more room to work. All this new space will give us more room for more food, treats, toys and so much more. But we are most excited to be adding Spaw!

A work in progress

Spaw is a full-service grooming salon tailored to the discerning dog owner. Spaw features top-of-the-line equipment like full-sized stainless steel bathing tubs and forced-air drying stations, premium grooming products and experienced professionals to pamper your dog from head to tail. We also feature a wide variety of specialty treatments and spa products for dogs with specific needs. Whether it’s a quick bath or the full Spaw treatment, your best friend is in the best of hands.

Our new home

Today we put up the banners so people can see where we are moving too. We will be on the main street of Village Pointe in the old Harry & David space. It is right on a corner, which is nice, so we still have grass for all our doggie visitors. Next time you stop out at Village Pointe be sure to fill out our customer cards so we can mail you special coupons and announcements (like our VIP night for when the new space opens).

We will keep you posted as everything moves along.

Today pets are treated as family and what family member doesn’t deserve a good party in their honor. Whether it’s a yappy hour or Birthday party, owners are going head-over-tails for canine-centric celebrations.

We, at Three Dog Bakery, are known for our dog friendly events such as Growl-O-Ween and frequent Yappy Hours so naturally we are masters at planning dog-oriented parties. Follow our 10 easy steps to plan a “puptacular” party they won’t want to miss!

1. Location – Pick a good location for your party. One that is pet-friendly and has lots of space to work with. Ideally you would want a patio and a lawn so the dogs and their owners have plenty of space. You can always contact local doggie day cares to see about renting space.

2. Pupdate – Pick the right date for your party. You want the weather to be cool enough for the pets but not too cold for their owners. Spring and fall are great times but summer can be accomplished on a cooler evening or morning. Just make sure the dogs have plenty of water to drink!

3. Rules – Simple rules are always good when you’re hosting a party, especially one that is canine oriented. A couple rules of thumb are bathroom breaks before eating and after, keeping dogs on a leash, and don’t allow anti-social dogs.

4. Choose a Theme – Choose a theme for your party. If it’s a birthday party get party hats, and Birthday cake for both kinds of guests, etc. If it is a Mexican Fiesta play appropriate music and have Mexican themed dishes for both human and pet, for example you can easily make doggie quesadillas out of our entrees and tortilla.

5. Party Decorations & Accessories – The fun part about throwing a party is getting all the decorations and accessories! Haute Diggity Dog and Charming Pet Products have plenty of themed toys, hats, and party collars to choose from. You can find a number of these products at your local Three Dog Bakery Store! If you are on a tight budget don’t fret, we have paw print party hats that are not as fancy but still great!

6. Chow Time – Creating a menu gives you the chance to be creative. When catering to the canines try cakes and Pupcakes from Three Dog Bakery or make your own Yappetizer baskets with Three Dog Bakery goodies! Our favorite is Cheese Fetch-it Sticks, Ciao Wow Cheese Pizzas, and Gracie’s Rollovers!

7. Games – Keep your guests engaged by holding contests! Some examples include longest tail, best costume, find the toy or even an Easter begg hunt for Easter.

8. Playtime – Have a designated playtime either before or after the meal/cake and ice cream. This gives the dogs a chance to socialize and release some energy!

9. Paw-tee Pics – You are the “puparazzi” at this party and you want to capture every moment!

10. Paw-tee Favors – Lastly, you want something for your guests to take home. We suggest a small toy or a fun “doggy bag” full of treats. At Three Dog Bakery we can customize paw-ty favors for any budget!

Hosting a Doggie “paw”ty is both fun and unique but with all the excitement expect accidents. Not everything will go as planned but don’t fret; relax and have fun with it!

Fun Tips:

Make iron-on bandanas for the dogs to wear at the party or for their party favor!

Have human guests make their own tie dye party collars while the dogs are having play time!

Get fun drinks for the dogs too; peanut butter or chicken flavored water creates the perfect K9 cocktail!

Fun Recipe: Little Eataly Meatballs

2 cups quick rolled oats

2 large eggs

2 pounds ground chicken or turkey meat

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon (or a pinch) of garlic powder

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix well, using your hands. Scoop out a tablespoon or two of the mixture and roll it into a ball. Continue with the rest of the mixture.

Place the meatballs on an ungreased shallow baking pan. Bake for 40 minutes.

Cool to room termperature before serving.

Store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or wrap well and freeze for up to 2 months. (Thaw before serving)

Brrrr…it’s cold outside! Most people assume that since dogs and cats have fur they are not affected by cold weather. This is not true many dogs and cats can be just as senstive as us. I have gathered some pet safety tips from the ASPCA.

Cats:

It is always a good idea to keep your cat inside. Outdoors, felines can freeze, become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife. If your cat really enjoys going outside stop in and we can fit them for a harness so you can take them out on a leash.

Make sure your cat has a nice warm bed to sleep in. At Three Dog Bakery we have a large selection of beds. You may also want to move your cats cozy bed closer to a heat vent (not over) to keep them extra comfortable during these cold months.

Dogs:

Never let your dog off leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm—dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags.

If you dog enjoys being outdoors in the cold be sure they have adequate protection. The cold ground and snow can cause the pads on their feet to get dry and cracked (they can even bleed!) shoes might be in order. Most people consider shoes to be silly or for only little dogs. However pet shoes can be a great way to keep all sizes of dogs comfortable in the cold. They will not only help keep there feet warm but they will help avoid picking up salt, antifreeze, or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking their paws. We carry shoes that are thin but still protect their feet. The thinniness helps make the dogs feel safe so they don’t notice the shoes as much. Chuckles and Maurice always wear their shoes because of all the salt, keeps their feet clean, and they are both sensitive to all the snow that gets built up int heri pads when they go out. Chuckles, if not wearing shoes, will get so cold he will lift up his feet and eventually just lay down because he gets too cold.

Thinking about grooming your pet during the winter? If you are planning on doing it yourslef be sure they are completly dry before letting them back otusdie. If taking them to a groomer, like Spaw at our Midtown Crossing location, make sure their hair isn’t cut too short. They need their fur to help keep them warm.

For short-haired breeds or other breeds that might be sensitive to the cold a sweater or coat might be in order. Bring your poochie in and we can find a sweater or coat that will keep them happy and warm all winter long.

Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside or stop in and purchase Poochie Bells they hang from your door and can help potty train your pet quickly. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.

Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center more information.

Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect. Maurice and Chuckles love to snuggle up in their Bagel Beds from Bessie and Barnie. Not only are these cushy beds great to look at they also clean up easily (everything unzips and can go in the wash!).

The Holidays are so much fun. But with all the fun sometimes pets can get ignored or sick during this time of year. Here are some tips from the ASPA.

Holly, Jolly and Oh-So-Safe! Of course you want to include your furry companions in the festivities, pet parents, but as you celebrate this holiday season, try to keep your pet’s eating and exercise habits as close to their normal routine as possible. And be sure to steer them clear of the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerous decorations:

O Christmas Tree
Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn’t tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will also prevent the tree water—which may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset—from spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe.

Tinsel-less Town
Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching “toy” that’s easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a nibble can lead to a swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting, dehydration and possible surgery. It’s best to brighten your boughs with something other than tinsel.

No Feasting for the Furries
By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol, but do you know the lengths to which an enterprising fur kid will go to chomp on something yummy? Make sure to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food, and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans. If you want them to have their own feast stop in at Three Dog Bakery. We have a large assortment of goodies for cats and dogs.

Toy Joy
Looking to stuff your pet’s stockings? Choose gifts that are safe.

Dogs have been known to tear their toys apart and swallowing the pieces, which can then become lodged in the esophagus, stomach or intestines. Stick with chew toys that are basically indestructible, Plant Dog has a line of toys that can be stuffed with healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be safely digestible.

Long, stringy things are a feline’s dream, but the most risky toys for cats involve ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can get stuck in the intestines, often necessitating surgery. Surprise kitty with a new ball that’s too big to swallow, a stuffed catnip toy or the interactive cat dancer—and tons of play sessions together.

Forget the Mistletoe & Holly
Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies, can cause kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-as-jolly artificial plants made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet.

Leave the Leftovers
Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as bones, should not be fed to your furry friends. Pets can join the festivities in other fun ways that won’t lead to costly medical bills.

That Holiday Glow
Don’t leave lighted candles unattended. Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock candles over. Be sure to use appropriate candle holders, placed on a stable surface. And if you leave the room, put the candle out!

Wired Up
Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of paws’ reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet’s mouth.

House Rules
If your animal-loving guests would like to give your pets a little extra attention and exercise while you’re busy tending to the party, ask them to feel free to start a nice play or petting session.

Put the Meds Away
Make sure all of your medications are locked behind secure doors, and be sure to tell your guests to keep their meds zipped up and packed away, too.

Careful with Cocktails
If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages, be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.

A Room of Their Own
Give your pet his own quiet space to retreat to—complete with fresh water and a place to snuggle. Shy pups and cats might want to hide out under a piece of furniture, in their carrying case or in a separate room away from the hubbub.

New Year’s Noise
As you count down to the new year, please keep in mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a cat’s intestines, if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers can terrify pets and cause possible damage to sensitive ears.

Feed vs. Food

Three Dog Bakery was founded in 1989 by three dogs, two guys, and a 59¢ biscuit cutter. Because Gracie (Mark Beckloff and Dan Dye’s Great Dane) was born deaf, blind in one eye, and had a delicate constitution, Mark and Dan made all of her own food. After researching what is allowed by regulation to be put in dog treats and food, Mark and Dan made a commitment to create a dog bakery that makes all-natural, oven-baked food and treats with 100% human-quality ingredients for dogs. Three Dog Bakery products contain no artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or other artificial ingredients.

How Dog Feed is Allowed to be Made:

Dog food companies fall under the auspices of the feed industry, which includes both agricultural feed and pet feed. Feed is different than food by definition in that feed is allowed to contain rather unsavory things that food may not contain.

While federal regulations ensure that dog feed meets certain minimum standards for keeping dogs alive, the same regulations also allow pet feed and treats to be made from all manner of things that we wouldn’t generally consider edible. They even allow parts and pieces that have been condemned for human consumption to be included in dog feed. These byproducts may come from animals that died in transit, died from disease, or were euthanized. To reach minimum crude fat requirements, dog feed is also allowed to contain the grease that is collected at restaurants.

Most dog feed is extruded. That is, meat, meat by products, and offal are scooped up and placed into the back of an unrefrigerated flat-bed truck. The truck can take about three days to a week to fill up. Once full, it is transported to the rendering facility where its contents are ground up into a paste and boiled at very high temperatures to kill harmful bacteria. Required nutrients are then added per government standards, and the food is extruded (puffed up with air) to create the kibble shape.

At this point, roughly three weeks may have passed from the time the truck started filling up; and a dog won’t eat the extruded kibble. Although dogs may eat something that’s three days old, they’re smart enough not to eat something that’s three weeks old. So, to make the kibble palatable, it is often sprayed with digest, which is exactly what it sounds like: emulsified guts. Digest gives extruded kibble its greasy texture, and is why most food bags are lined with a sort of waxed paper. This is also why many commercial brands do not have a window on their packaging to see the kibble. Although palatable to dogs, it’s also what makes us wonder why they eat it. It certainly doesn’t smell appetizing.

Some companies use terms like holistic and organic to make their products appear more wholesome than they are. In reality, there is no government-endorsed definition for the term holistic. At the end of the day, a dead animal in the gutter could be called ”holistic”. And the term organic is only a certification of how the grain was grown or the feed was raised prior to harvest or slaughter. It says nothing about the quality of the finished product. Many so-called “organic” dog foods contain ingredients that have been condemned for human consumption.

How Three Dog Bakery Food for Dogs is Made:

At Three Dog Bakery we believe in feeding our furry friends like they are a part of the family. Three Dog Bakery food for dogs exceeds government minimum standards by containing only the finest ingredients.

Our food includes premium-quality meats such as chicken, lamb, and fish made with whole, unadulterated parts that are refrigerated until such time as all ingredients are combined into a dough, dye-cut, and baked 5-10 times more slowly than most brands to preserve nutritive value and flavor. We add no animal fat, no meat meal, and no byproducts. Loaded with anti-oxidants, essential fatty acids, and wholesomeness, Three Dog Bakery food is ready to eat when it comes out of the oven. No digest is sprayed on our food! And rather than being artificially preserved, Three Dog Bakery food is preserved with natural ingredients.

So it’s not dog feed; it’s all-natural, oven-baked food made with premium-quality ingredients—for dogs! Stop in to get your pup a sample today at our Village Pointe or Midtown Crossing location.
